Obama: I Am A Champion For Gay Americans

Obama: I Am A Champion For Gay Americans – Political Hotsheet – CBS News

June 29, 2009 5:46 PM Posted by Brian Montopoli (CBS)

The post reports on comments made by President Obama, to gay establishment notables at a White House reception to celebrate and close Pride 09. Obama has come under much criticism recently for perceived in action on promises made to Our Community during his 08 campaign. He “said that his administration has made some progress on behalf of gay Americans and plans to do more”. Further to this in acknowledging the community’s criticism on his record to date, Obama stated, “I know that many in this room don’t believe that progress has come fast enough, and I understand that.” However he added “It’s not for me to tell you to be patient anymore than it was for others to counsel patience to African-Americans who were petitioning for equal rights a half-century ago.”

“But I say this: We have made progress,” the president continued. “And we will make more. And I want you to know that I expect and hope to be judged not by words, not by promises I’ve made, but by the promises that my administration keeps.”

It has taken most of human history for mainstream to come to a point of what I would call tolerance of Our Community. This is evident in the increased acknowledgement of our civil rights and high profile social acceptance in most parts of the world. It is also evident in recent law reforms that improve our legal standing in addressing various matters. Have we achieved full citizenship, no we do not enjoy all the privileges of the heterosexual world, however there have been many significant advances. I am not saying we stop lobbying, demanding and taking social action, rather seeing Obama has held office for some 6 months at best, how realistic is it to expect him to reform all of the neo-con legislation of previous decades in that shor period. In these situations a saying comes to mind

Be hard on the issue, but soft on the person, if you seek positive outcomes

A Right to Marry? Same-sex Marriage and Constitutional Law

A Right to Marry? Same-sex Marriage and Constitutional Law by Ms Martha Nussbaum – Dissent Magazine

This article provides a well-articulated case for Same-Sex marriage, stating a clear logical challenge to its detractors.  Ms Nussbaum argues from a civil rights perspective in stating,

“Marriage is both ubiquitous and central. All across our country, in every region, every social class, every race and ethnicity, every religion or non-religion, people get married. For many if not most people, moreover, marriage is not a trivial matter. It is a key to the pursuit of happiness, something people aspire to—and keep aspiring to, again and again, even when their experience has been far from happy. To be told “You cannot get married” is thus to be excluded from one of the defining rituals of the American life cycle.”

While this article speaks to the domestic market, the key points could apply in any culture. In that the author identifies marriage as a central institution and as a defining ritual within society, this view seems to have a universal appeal.

I rarely make comment on the topic of Same-Sex marriage, while I offer unconditional support, there is a voice deep inside saying, Our Community faces a number of issues and marriage is but one of them.

Stand together

Breakdown the barriers

There’s nothing that can’t be done, when we raise our voices as one

We are the world

Black & White

Will you be there

Cry

Man in the Mirror

Black & White

Earth Song

You are not alone

I’ll be there

Heal the world
